General Manager - Washington
Pearl Edison
About Pearl Edison
Company
Pearl Edison is a software-enabled general contractor for complex residential electrification and energy efficiency projects. We operate a turnkey home concierge service for our partners - utilities, governments, green lenders, community organizations, environmental champions, and anyone that wants to make more of these projects happen. We help these partners enforce quality end-to-end and maintain the trust of their customers.
We’re building a game-changing software platform to manage electrification and energy efficiency projects end to end - from lead acquisition and qualification, to in-home data collection and diagnostic testing, to system design and project scoping, to post-install quality assurance. And we’re building a killer operations team - supported by that software platform - to deliver these projects. We’re growing fast, so the team is too.
We exist in service of homeowners. Electrification isn’t easy, even if you’re motivated - it’s a lot of work to figure out the right scope of work, ensure a quality system design, get a fair price, find a qualified installer, and ensure best-practice install and commissioning. We help.
We exist in service of our contractor partners - in particular, contractors who do great work and win on install quality. Customer acquisition is expensive. We send our partners fully contracted, fully designed jobs. We measure our success by their improved profitability.
We exist in service of our partners - in service of their mission to make more electrification projects happen, and their commitment to serving their customers well.
We’re fired up about our work because we have an opportunity to solve kitchen table problems for customers, help great contractors win, and dent climate change - win-win-win - at the same time, at scale.
Leadership
Pearl Edison was founded by Jake Yurek (CEO) and Evan Anderson (Product, Growth). You’ll meet both during the hiring process.
Our team brings diverse expertise, high energy, and a passion for the product we’re building and the problem we’re solving.
About the Role
Overview
Pearl Edison is hiring a General Manager to lead our business in Washington. Your success will be measured by the health of our business in this market - customer experience, contractor experience, and profitability.
You will build a team and a business in Washington from the ground up, grounded in an anchor partnership with an unannounced partner. You and your team will drive the project pipeline, recruit and manage our local contractor network, and deliver for our customers. Over time, you’ll forge new partnerships to grow the business.
You’ll report to Pearl Edison Co-Founder, Jake, and you’ll collaborate with Pearl Edison Co-Founder Evan Anderson on growth initiatives. You’ll operate as a team of one on day one, then hire and manage a team of Advisors and Auditors as the business grows in Washington.
What you’re responsible for
Day-to-day, you will:
- Drive the project pipeline - at first as an individual contributor, and over time by managing a team of Advisors, Auditors, and Delivery Managers. This entails end-to-end project support - sales and customer support, system design, and project delivery. (Read job descriptions for Advisor and Auditor for more detail.)
- Manage our local contractor network. The work of our Advisors and Auditors sets the ceiling for customer experience. The work of our installing contractor partners sets the floor. You will own all of our contractor relationships in Washington - you’ll identify great contractors, recruit them, and keep them engaged.
- Manage pricing to reflect local market conditions. Over time, you’ll know the local market better than anyone. Once you’re the expert, you’ll be responsible for our pricing in Washington.
- Ensure project delivery on time and on spec. A Delivery Manager will be responsible for fulfillment-related blocking and tackling, but you’re accountable. (Read job description for Delivery Manager for more detail.)
- Create new local partnerships to drive volume. Our business in Washington is anchored by an unannounced potential partner - but we’ll grow it with a range of other local partners. You’ll look for opportunities and collaborate with the Growth team to close them.
- Step in to perform the responsibilities of an Advisor and an Auditor, when you have to. You’ll apprentice in both roles so that you’re intimately familiar with the jobs you’re managing.
- Solve the problem of the day when it falls outside of everyone else’s job description. Such is life for a GM at a startup!
Apart from your day-to-day responsibilities, you’ll provide feedback and work with the Product, Design, and Engineering teams to make the software platform better - to support your work and produce better results for the homeowners and contractors we serve. Every team member at Pearl Edison shares this responsibility. We’re a software-enabled service, not software-as-a-service, and we’re only as good as our workflow - the platform we are building to streamline and enforce workflow, and our execution of workflow. You should feel personal responsibility for both.
What you’re accountable for
You’re accountable for:
- The financial performance of the market - volume, margin, and profitability targets
- The “health” of the market - customer experience, contractor experience, and the health of anchor partnerships
- Leadership of your team - the productivity and experience of your Advisors and Auditors
- Workflow and product optimization - your contribution to making the company better within and beyond your market
- Business development - identifying and supporting creative new-new growth opportunities
- Being the voice of the Washington market - your role in ensuring that the company’s priorities and decision-making reflect what’s happening on the ground
